Influenza
Influenza is a respiratory viral infection which is commonly referred to as the “flu”. Influenza typically starts suddenly and may include the following symptoms:
•fever (usually high)
•headache
•tiredness
•cough
•sore throat
•runny or stuffy nose
•body aches
•diarrhea and vomiting (more common in children)
These symptoms are very similar to those associated with the common cold. Testing by a doctor within 2-3 days of onset can determine if you have influenza. Proper diagnosis is crucial in preventing complications such as pneumonia, dehydration and possible worsening of other pre-existing medical conditions.
Individuals who are at high risk of complications from the flu, include people aged 65 and over, with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, pregnant women and children. Illness caused by the flu can range in severity, however, can result in death if not properly treated. If you suspect that you may have the flu, please see your physician as soon as possible.
The best way to prevent getting the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year. The best time to get vaccinated is in October or November, however, anytime is better than not getting the vaccination at all. January is the peak of “flu season”, however, cases of the flu can be seen as late as May.
Frequent hand washing, with warm soapy water, will also help prevent influenza infections as the virus is spread through contact with those who may or may not know they are sick. Also, when sneezing or coughing, “Cover Your Cough” using your elbow – this prevents germs from being on your hands and getting spread through touch.
