Hurricanes
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is the state agency responsible for coordinating federal, state, local voluntary and private resources during emergencies and disasters in Massachusetts. MEMA advises that “Every home and business should have a basic supply kit that could be used in any emergency” and to “Familiarize yourself with your Community Emergency Plans before an emergency situation occurs”.
For individuals living in private, single family homes, the following tips are offered to help minimize risk of damage during a hurricane:
•Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed
•Remove diseased or damaged tree limbs from property
•Keep rain gutters free and clear of debris
•Ensure that storage sheds are properly anchored or on a permanent foundation
•Know how to shut off your utilities, as well as where gas pilots and water mains are located
In preparation of an expected hurricane, the following steps should be taken:
•Cover windows and sliding doors with plywood
•Bring outdoor items, (lawn furniture, grills, trash barrels, hanging plants, toys and awnings) inside
•Keep doors and windows closed and locked
In general, homeowners should:
•Keep a record of property, including a list of valuables. Include photos with your records
•Keep insurance policies and other important paperwork in a secure place such as a safe deposit box or water tight box
•Purchase Flood Insurance if potential damage by hurricane winds or flooding is not covered by your existing policy
In Massachusetts, Governor Patrick has proclaimed July as ‘Hurricane Preparedness Month”, but the Hurricane season runs from June 1st – November 30th.
